Indian IT industry to reach $285 Billion by 2020

With an expected compounded annual growth rate of 15 percent in the next 10 years, the Indian IT and ITES sector could touch $285-billion by 2020 from $71.6 billion in 2009.

According to a report by KPMG and Asia Oceanic Computing Industry Organisation, which represents 15,000 companies in Asia and Australian continents, India would continue to lead in global sourcing activity, reports Business Line.

The 'Asia-Oceania Vision 2020: Enabling IT leadership through collaboration' report concentrated on the opportunities and challenges for the 20-major countries in the two continents to tap the global opportunities. The report predicts that the region will become the largest supplier of IT and IT-enabled services by 2020, with 74.5 percent of the global demand expected to be sourced from the region.

The report also said that the climate change would gain prominence as an important 'industry' by 2020. Spending on efficient technologies, renewable energy, recycling and waste management would grow significantly within the region and globally. Kumar Parakala, Global Head of Sourcing Advisory and Chief Operating Officer (KPMG India), said applications in healthcare, education, governance and infrastructure would drive the growth both within the region and across the globe.

TCS to hire 30,000 employees

With hiring seems to be back in full swing, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), plans to hire 30,000 employees in the financial year 2010-2011. The company is currently seeing an 8-10 percent growth in revenue from domestic operations and is eyeing a double-digit growth in the next two years.

TCS CEO and MD N Chandrasekaran said that the company will hike salaries of its employees in the coming fiscal, but did not give details. TCS, has not hiked wages in the current fiscal, but employees have received 150 percent VA payouts in two consecutive quarters - Q2 and Q3 of FY'10.

"We are on a path to hire 1,000 people. We have already hired 300," he said, replying to a query on hiring plans for the current fiscal. In Q3 of FY-10, TCS had made 7,692 net additions, compared with a net addition of 320 in the previous quarter.

Asked about the extent to which India would be affected by the U.S. move to slash tax-breaks to outsourcers, Chandrasekaran said the matter is not an immediate concern. Also Chandrasekaran said, "China is a tough market for IT firms and the company was seeing business opportunity in Europe." Chandrasekaran said the company had signed a few large deals as well as a number of smaller ones. "The financial services sector will drive growth. We expect good growth from retail, pharma and utilities," he said.

Intel to showcase Atom on student's hexapod robot

A student from University of Arizona has made a hexapod robot which can even dance. Matt Bunting who developed this unique robot had put up a video on YouTube which caught Intel's attention. Intel has now ordered two of them to promote its Atom processors at trade shows and engineering meetings, reports CNET.

The robot uses Intel's 1.60GHz Atom Z530 and US15W chipset. It runs on the Ubuntu open-source operating system. Bunting built the as-yet unnamed robot from spare parts as a final project for a UA class on cognitive robotics. A camera mounted on the front of the six-legged creature (each leg has three degrees of freedom) takes successive images, which are used to help Hex determine if it is moving forward, sideways, or backward or tilting. By analyzing the visual feedback, the 14x17x8-inch robot adaptively "learns" how to most effectively achieve its forward-moving goal.

"One of the things I wanted to explore was the idea of reinforcement learning. What I wanted to do was not preprogram any of those walking algorithms, I wanted it to figure out how to walk straight forward on its own," Bunting said. "It has the ability to figure it out itself."

Bunting's professor Tony Lewis says the bot's learning algorithm can be applied to tasks other than walking. If a leg breaks or a motor gets damaged, for example, it can relearn how to walk. The robot even has foot contact sensors that can be used for terrain adaptation.

"I see that this device might be doing scientific work like autonomous navigation, mapping of different environments, moving over rough terrain and doing exploration, possibly planetary exploration," Lewis said. "I think Matt's robot has a lot of possibilities. It's really not so far-fetched that a robot like this could go to Mars."

Intel has already showcased this robot in Society of Women Engineers conference in Phoenix and plans to feature it at March events including Embedded World in Nuremberg, Germany, and Sigcse 2010 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

CEOs more sensitive and emotionally unstable than others?

Bangalore: Ask CEOs to pick their favorite color and what they select will often be very different than what most people would pick. A personality test conducted on CEOs recently has revealed that on average, they are 'more sensitive and private than the typical person, and more likely to be emotionally unstable."

For the personality test conducted by USA Today, the CEOs were asked to rank their favorite colors, and their answers were then analyzed by an expert psychiatry professor. According to USA Today, many of the CEOs described the results as 'eerily accurate.'

The test showed that CEOs were three times more likely than the average person to choose magenta as their color and significantly less likely to choose red or yellow. This led to the conclusion that CEOs 'are not as self-assured as the public at large, and they are more cooperative and less forceful than the typical person.'

While the test confirmed that the CEOs are meant for 'upper management' positions, they also proved more likely to be 'social workers, artists and teachers,' and the typical CEO is actually well-suited to be an administrative assistant.'

"CEOs see the big, bold and colorful picture and help others see the vision as well," said test-taker Edward Jennings, CEO of Copanion, which provides tax professionals with Web-based applications. "Leaders are storytellers, teachers and investors."

Psychiatry professor Rense Lange says that no one knows why so much can be learned about a person by the colors they choose. Those answers are buried deep in neuroscience, he says, but it's just a matter of time before marketers will be able to target products to consumers based on color preferences.

Do you want earn money by writing reviews on your blog?

There are several relatively easy ways to make some money from your blog such as using Google AdSense, selling private ad spots, and writing reviews. The downside with using Google AdSense and trying to sell private ad spots is your blog must have enough traffic to generate the clicks or page impressions. My guess is most of you aren’t getting hundreds of visitors to your blog each day (not yet at least) so you aren’t making much money from those methods of advertising.
So where does that leave us? If you haven’t heard of writing reviews on your blog to generate a decent stream of income then you might want to check it out.

How does writing reviews make me money?

It’s actually easier than you think. The first step is to sign up with a blog review network and submit your blog. Some of these companies have rules in place like the age of your blog (at least 6 months old, etc), where it’s hosted (blogspot, wordpress, etc), and page rank. They try to weed out spam blog sites which are usually not very old or of good quality. Make sure you read the fine print before you spend your time applying only to find out you don’t qualify.
Assuming your blog is approved, you can now browse the review marketplace looking for reviews to write about or another option is to wait for someone to approach you. I recommend you be the aggressor and sift through the marketplace so you can start making money asap.
Once you find a review you’d like to write about and meet the criteria to qualify, just take it and begin. You’ll create your blog post and follow the requirements of the reviewer, then submit it for approval. After it’s approved, you get paid. Pretty easy huh?

What blog review networks do you recommend?

There are several companies out there who pay you to write reviews on your blog but only two of them are worth talking about in my opinion. They are Sponsored Reviews and Pay Per Post.
sponsored reviews logo
Sponsored Reviews is great because they allow you to search for advertisers directly and bid on jobs. Their bidding system allows you to negotiate rates with advertisers in order to maximize your earnings. They also provide the largest payout of all review networks by only taking a 35% commission for their services. That means you can earn anything from $10 to 500+ for each review. Their user interface is one of the better ones out there and the only drawback to their service is the lack of advertisers. I’m sure it will continue to grow it’s advertising base so they are at least worth a look.
One other perk is their affiliate program. Earn up to $175 per Advertiser and $90 Per Blogger referred. Payouts are based on money spent by the advertiser and money earned by the blogger. See the chart below for payouts. Their average advertiser spends several hundred dollars so most referrals will be worth at least $25 (according to their website).
sponsored reviews payout chart
You’ll then want to put one of their ads on your site or a text link to start taking advantage of their referral bonuses. Can’t hurt to get an ad on your blog right? Get started with Sponsored Reviews now.
payperpost logo
Next up we have PayPerPost which is another great pay for review site. They offer the largest sponsored blogging network with the greatest amount of offers along with a forum where bloggers can post questions, etc. They also pay you a $20 bonus after you complete your first review post. The review post is easy…you just need to write about PayPerPost and they give you $20. Pretty quick way to make a quick $20.
One bad thing I noticed while browsing their marketplace is the restrictions on a few of the reviews. For example, you couldn’t write a review and post it on blogspot.com, wordpress.com, or myspace.com and you must be located in North America, Asia, or Europe only. That doesn’t mean if you have a blogger blog or wordpress blog using your own domain or hosted on your own site you can’t write a review. All I’m saying is make sure you read the review details carefully so you don’t waste your time writing a post only to discover you won’t get credit for it.
They also have a scoring system which might be a barrier to you on some post reviews. It’s usually the higher payouts that are looking for nice reviews from established high ranking sites. They utilize Google Page Rank and Amazon’s Alexa rankings to factor in what your site’s “score” will be.
PayPerPost also offers a referral affiliate program with some pretty nice payouts as well. You will get paid $15 for each referral once the referees first blog posting is reviewed, approved and then finally accepted 30 days later. This means they need to go all the way through the process in order for it to be a legit referral. Again, not a bad payout for just putting a banner or link on your blog. It’s cool because you can see which referrals you currently have signed up and the total amount you potentially could earn (assuming they convert all the way mentioned above).

Summary

If I were you, I’d sign up for both Sponsored Reviews and PayPerPost and see which one works best for you. There is no rule preventing you from having two accounts and writing reviews from both sites and you can promote whichever you choose. That’s what I did and it also gives you a bigger selection of available reviews to write. After you sign up, make sure you get some affiliate banners on your blog so you have another avenue to make money. Just imagine if you write a dozen or so reviews a month and get a couple referrals. You could easily earn a few hundred extra bucks a month for some pretty minimal work!
I wish these sort of sites were available when I was in college because I had tons of free time and needed to make money. I could have easily earned $500+ a month writing a couple reviews a day!

How to Install Google Analytics on Blogger

Google Analytics Blogger LogoWouldn’t it be nice to know how many people actually visited your blog each day? How about knowing which of your posts are the most popular? Well surprisingly Blogger doesn’t currently offer any native blog analytics but fortunately there is Google Analytics — available for free.
Google Analytics is a great tool that will show you all sorts of useful information about how people found your blog, keywords they searched on to find you, where they came from and even how long they stayed. You’ll learn more about where your visitors come from and how they interact with your blog. This is a must tool if you are trying to build a profitable blog otherwise you are flying blind!
This article will show you how to add Google Analytics to your Blogger blog. It’s a fairly simple process and doesn’t require any technical skill at all.

Step #1 – Setup a Google Analytics Account

Go to Google Analytics and sign in using your Blogger login. If your account doesn’t work for some reason, you can create a new one instead. Once you login you’ll see a screen that looks like this:
Google Analytics Blogger Sign Up Step 1
Click on the “Sign Up >>” button and proceed to the next step which will ask you for your general information. Website URL, Account Name, Country, and Time Zone. The screen will look like this:
Google Analytics Blogger Step 2
If you noticed, I just put my Blogger url (without the http://) and called it “David’s Account” because this is your top-level container for 1 or 100 different websites so it’s a good idea to name it something more general. The next step will ask you for your contact information which includes your first name, last name, phone number, and country. Easy so far right? :-)
Google Analytics Blogger Step 3
Your last step in signing up will ask you to accept the user agreement terms and conditions which you should read (just kidding…who actually ever reads these entire legal terms anyhow?).
Google Analytics Blogger Step 4
Now this next screen is very important. This is the code you will need to copy and paste into your blogger template. Go ahead and click into the box and it will automatically highlight the entire block of code for you. Now you need to copy that code and paste it into notepad or into a MS Word document. Save it as you’ll need to use it later.
Google Analytics Blogger Step 5
After you click on the “continue >>” button you will be taken to your brand new Google Analytics dashboard! You will see your blogger blog listed but with no analytical data….yet.
Google Analytics Blogger Dashboard
Ok, now you are done with setting up your Google Analytics account. The next step is placing the tracking code into your Blogger template so it can report back to Google Analytics and provide you with some cool data points.

Step #2 – Adding GA Tracking Code to Your Blogger Template

This is not a very difficult step even if you are afraid to touch your template code. Login to your Blogger account and then click on the “Layout” => “Edit HTML” tabs. This will bring you to the template code. Before you make any changes, I advice you to back up your template just in case there are any problems. After you’ve done so, continue reading.
Now in the edit template html code window, scroll all the way to the bottom of your template code and look for the tag. There should only be one of these closing tags in your template. If you can’t find it then your template wasn’t properly created and you should add one right above the  tag. The  tag should always be your last line of code in your template. It signifies the end of your template.
Ok, now go back to the code you saved before in a Word Doc from Google Analytics. You are going to copy it and paste it right above the  tag as illustrated in the image below. The yellow highlighted code is the new GA code I just pasted into my template.
blogger google analytics code 2
Save your template and you shouldn’t get any error messages. If you do, it’s most likely not related to this GA code and something else with your template itself. Assuming you’ve been successful with your save, you are all done embedding the GA code in your template!

Step #3 – Confirm Google Analytics is Tracking

Go back into your Google Analytics account and look at your dashboard. Most likely you will see a little yellow exclamation mark under the “status” column that looks like this: google analytics tracking not installed. This means everything isn’t working properly yet which is fine because we are about to tell GA we just added the code. From your dashboard, click on the “edit” link which is located to the far right.
Google Analytics Blogger Dashboard Edit
After you click on that link, you’ll see another screen like below. It will say “Tracking Not Installed” followed by a link “Check Status”. You’ll want to go ahead and click on that link which will tell GA to visit your site and look for the new code you just pasted in your template.
Google Analytics Blogger Dashboard Check Code
Assuming you pasted the code in there as instructed above, GA will find the new code and begin tracking everything on your blog. If you are still having problems, it’s most likely something to do with GA and you should read their help guide to troubleshoot your problem.
Google Analytics Blogger Dashboard Success
The message seen here, “Waiting for Data” means you have correctly setup GA and data is being gathered! Click on the top left Google Analytics logo and it will take you back to your dashboard. From there click on the “View report” link and that’s where all your very important Blogger visitor data will start appearing!
Google Analytics Blogger Dashboard Results
Now it usually takes an hour or so before you will see any data (maybe longer if you don’t get much traffic to your blog) so please be patient. Trust me, you’ll be logging in at least once a day just to see how much traffic your blog is getting. It’s very addicting and powerful information to learn from. You’ll be surprised which posts are your most popular and what countries people are coming from to read your blog.
Google Analytics is very powerful and we have just learned how to install it into your Blogger template. We haven’t even scratched the surface on the features and reporting it can do. For most Bloggers, this will be enough. Data will be collected and you will just review it.

How to Try the New Google Search

There shouldn't be any http://google.com in front of that. Just that code.
3. Hit enter.
4. Reload or open a new Google.com page and you will have access to the new user interface.

58 percent of laid-off employees are back in jobs

New York: Despite the tough job market in the U.S., there might be some hope for job seekers there, with a survey showing that nearly six in ten workers laid off in the last year have landed new jobs, reports Business Standard.

According to a report by online employment firm CareerBuilder, about 58 percent of those laid off in the last 12 months have secured new jobs. "Despite one of the most competitive job markets in decades, nine in ten workers say that they have not given up on their job searches, and the amount of workers who have found work is clear that their drive and determination are paying off," said CareerBuilder (North America) President Brent Rasmussen.

The survey was conducted among over 1,000 workers who were laid off within the past one year. About 51 percent of respondents said that they have found full-time work since being laid off, which is a three percent increase from June 2009 and seven percent of employees said that they have found part-time work.

Further, over half of those who secured new jobs found work in a different field than where they were previously employed. "The number of laid-off workers who have found new full-time and part-time jobs rose in the last six months. Although this good news reflects a healing economy, it also shows that job seekers are exploring career options in new industries and locations," Rasmussen added.

Also, about 61 percent of workers found jobs with comparable or even higher wages than the job they were laid off from. Laid-off workers used every technique possible to secure new positions. The survey revealed that 22 percent of them found their new roles through referrals, while another 22 percent said that they got new jobs using online job boards.

Indians are over committed, reluctant to differ

Brussels: Business executives in Europe feel Indians display a reluctance to disagree, a tendency to over-commit and a lack of transparency in sharing information. A new survey conducted by outsourcing advisory firm Quantum Step reveals that in Continental Europe, India's attitude towards caste and gender issues impact India's position as a global business center.

Quantum Step surveyed 35 top companies across Europe, asking them to discuss the barriers they felt existed in doing business with Indian outsourcing firms, reports Business Standard. Companies in the Nordic region pointed out the "awkwardness" with which Indian men interacted with women. "Often, the Indian teams that are sent to make a sales pitch, don't include even a single woman," says Sridhar Vedala, Quantum Step's Managing Director. "But the people they are pitching to are commonly women."

Another complaint listed was the difference in the way Indians were perceived to behave towards their European clients and towards their own Indian subordinates. A final point made had to do with the perception that Indians working onshore in Europe made little attempt to integrate with local employees, preferring instead to socialise and live with other Indians. But despite these findings, Vedala insists that Continental Europe is gradually opening up to do business with Indian outsourcing companies. "There is already significant activity in the Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg) region, as well as in Germany," he says.

Voice translator from Google

Bangalore: Internet giant Google, which has also made an entry in the mobile world with its own phone Nexus One, is working on a software which will interpret foreign languages as a person speak. The translation is done almost instantly and Google hopes to have a basic system ready within a couple of years, reports Chris Gourlay of Sunday Times.

Google has already developed an automatic system for translating text on computers, which is being polished by scanning millions of multi-lingual websites and documents. So far it covers 52 languages.

Recently Google also launched a feature where a user can search on the search engine by saying the key words instead of typing. Now it is working on combining the two technologies to produce software capable of understanding a caller's voice and translating it into a synthetic equivalent in a foreign language. The phone would analyse "packages" of speech, listening to the speaker until it understands the full meaning of words and phrases, before attempting translation. "We think speech-to-speech translation should be possible and work reasonably well in a few years' time," said Franz Och, Google's Head of Translation Services.

Although automatic text translators are now reasonably effective, voice recognition has proved more challenging. "Everyone has a different voice, accent and pitch," said Och. "But recognition should be effective with mobile phones because by nature they are personal to you. The phone should get a feel for your voice from past voice search queries, for example."

A small info on SEZ (Special Economical Zone)

Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is a geographical region that has economic laws that are more liberal than a country's typical economic laws. The category 'SEZ' covers a broad range of more specific zone types, including Free Trade Zones (FTZ), Export Processing Zones (EPZ), Free Zones (FZ), Industrial Estates (IE), Free Ports, Urban Enterprise Zones and others. Usually the goal of a structure is to increase foreign direct investment by foreign investors, typically an international business or a multinational corporation (MNC).

SEZs have been implemented using a variety of institutional structures across the world ranging from fully public (government operator, government developer, government regulator) to 'fully' private (private operator, private developer, public regulator). In many cases, public sector operators and developers act as quasi-government agencies in that they have a pseudo-corporate institutional structure and have budgetary autonomy. SEZs are often developed under a public-private partnership arrangement, in which the public sector provides some level of support (provision of off-site infrastructure, equity investment, soft loans, bond issues, etc) to enable a private sector developer to obtain a reasonable rate of return on the project (typically 10-20% depending on risk levels).

List of SEZs in India

The policy provides for setting up of SEZs in the public, private, joint sector or by State Governments. One of them is Sricity Multi product SEZ, part of Sricity which is a developing satellite city in the epicentre of AP & TN. It was also envisaged that some of the existing Export Processing Zones would be converted into Special Economic Zones.
  • Mahindra World City, (Chennai and Jaipur) from Mahindra Group
  • Bangalore (Karnataka)
  • Mangalore (Karnataka)
  • Chennai,Trichy, Ilandaikulam Madurai, Nanguneri and Tirunelveli (Tamil Nadu)
  • Ahmedabad, Baroda, Kandla and Surat (Gujarat)
  • Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh)
  • Cochin (Kerala)
  • Pithampur (Madhya Pradesh)
  • Nagpur also refer MIHAN, Pune and SEEPZ in Mumbai (Maharashtra)
  • NOIDA, Greater NOIDA (Uttar Pradesh) UP
  • Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh)
  • Agra (Uttar Pradesh)
  • Pharma and Biotech SEZ, Aurangabad, Maharashtra (http://www.inspirainfra.com)
  • MARG Swarnabhoomi (SEZs) for Engineering and Multi Services, (Tamil Nadu)
  • Polepally (Andhra Pradesh)
  • Velankani SEZ, (Chennai) (http://www.velankanisez.com)
  • Falta (West Bengal)
  • Kensington (Powai, Mumbai)
  • Chennai One (Thoraipakkam, Chennai)
  • ETA Technopark (Navalur, Chennai)

Currently, India has more than 1022 units in operations in over 9 functional SEZs, each an average size of 200 acres (0.81 km2). 8 Export Processing Zones (EPZs) have been converted into SEZs. These are fully functional. All these SEZs are in various parts of the country in the private/joint sectors or by the State Government. But this process of planning and development is under question, as the states in which the SEZs have been approved are facing intense protests, from the farming community, accusing the government of forcibly snatching fertile land from them, at heavily discounted prices as against the prevailing prices in the commercial real estate industry. Also some reputed companies likeBajaj and others have commented against this policy and have suggested using barren and wasteland for setting up of SEZs.
Attempts to set up a Special Economic Zone in Nandigram have led to protests by villagers in the area. A Parliamentary Committee to study and give recommendations on SEZs has said that no further SEZs be notified unless the existing law is amended to incorporate the changes related to the land acquisitions.
Genpact has announced its plans to expand its presence in Hyderabad by setting up a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) across 50 acres (200,000 m2) in the city at Jawahar Nagar.

YouTube confirms IPv6 support

YouTube confirmed that it now supports IPv6, the long-anticipated upgrade to the Internet's main communications protocol, in a blog post published Friday.
"We're proud to make YouTube available over IPv6 and to begin streaming videos from a select number of sites worldwide to our Google over IPv6 partners," wrote Lorenzo Colitti, a Google network engineer. "With YouTube on board, we now have a significant amount of content delivered on IPv6 and a real audience/traffic for it."
Earlier in the week, ISPs guessed that YouTube had begun production-level support for IPv6 because they saw a huge surge of IPv6 traffic leaving YouTube's data centers worldwide.
In his blog post, Colitti said support of IPv6 was necessary to allow more people and devices to attach directly to the Internet.
IPv6 is "a win for openness and new applications because any device can connect to any other device on the Internet," Colitti wrote. "It's even a win for security, because it's harder for hackers to find your computer and attack it."
The Internet is running out of addresses using the current version of the Internet Protocol, known as IPv4. IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses and can support approximately 4.3 billion devices.
More than 90% of IPv4 addresses have already been assigned. The conventional wisdom of the Internet industry is that the rest of the IPv4 addresses will be allocated in 2012.
That's why Web sites like YouTube are upgrading to IPv6. With 128-bit addresses, IPv6 can support so many devices that only a mathematical expression -- 2 to the 128th power -- can quantify its size.
In order to use YouTube's new IPv6 service, users will need an IPv6 connection from their ISPs.
More IPv6 connections should be available to U.S. consumers soon, given that Comcast recently announced a series of IPv6 trials.
Google is a leader in IPv6 deployment, having already IPv6-enabled its Search, Alerts, Docs, Finance, Gmail, Health, iGoogle, News, Reader, Picasa, Maps, Wave, Chrome and Android products.
Other popular Web sites – including Facebook, Yahoo and eBay – are committed to deploying IPv6within the next 18 months.

A Quick Solution to Protect Your Blog From Spam Harvesters in David Cowgill (Founder of eBlog Templates website) words...

Are you tired of getting a ton of spam everyday? I am too but unfortunately there is no solution to eliminate it 100% but there are smart ways to avoid and reduce spam. The method I’m going to talk about is aimed at bloggers and how they can easily implement a preventative measure to reduce the amount and chances of spam being sent to them.
With the popularity and ease of setting up a blog, the number of people blogging increases daily. This is great but one main problem is most of these people aren’t usually educated in proper techniques such as spam prevention.
Did you know that putting your email address anywhere on your blog or website is an open invitation for new spam? Yes, you heard me right. Little do you know that trying to be nice and provide a method for your readers to contact you only causes you more harm than good.
Let me give you an example. The usual way to include your email address on your blog is to use the mailto: tag. This is the case if you use Blogger and any other blogging platform. Unfortunately for you, spam harvesters use “web spiders” to troll the internet and look for email address links on websites and blogs. When they come across your site they will look at the html code and grab your address.

Prevent Spam Harvesters From Getting Your Email Address

The best way to beat spam bots as well as giving your readers a way to contact you is to use a contact submission form. That way your email address is never displayed and a script handles the entire mailing process. This is a great option if you use WordPress but for people using Blogger, it’s not an option.
You don’t know how many Blogger blogs I’ve come across and just rolled my eyes. There it is…their email address listed right on their site. Look out spam, here it comes! So my quick solution to protect all blogs (especially Blogger users) from spam bots is to replace your email address with an image.
There are several sites out there that can create free email icon images for you but I like using this email icon generator site because it provides several cool options. My favorite is the branded email image based on your email host provider.
Here are some examples of email images I created in a few seconds:
mac.png
yahoo.png
aol.png
email2.png
emailaddress.png
mac.png
email3.png
As you can see, it supports all the popular email domain addresses as well as an option to create your own custom email address. It even hosts the image for you if you don’t want to copy and upload it to your own server. I recommend uploading it to your Blogger site so you’ve always got it available regardless.
Make sure after you use these images you do NOT turn them into a mailto link. If your email address is anywhere in the html code, spam harvesters will find it. I had a friend that I shared this trick with and he replaced his email address with this image but didn’t remove the mailto link! He might as well of not even used the image.

Damage Control – Where is My Email Address Today?

Ever wonder if your email address is publicly available today? A good test to see what sites publicly list your email address is to just Google it. If your email address is sjobs@mac.com then you’ll see that there are over 500 resultsin Google which is obviously a bad sign (I hope Steve Jobs has one heck of a good spam filter). There should be zero listings of your email address when you do a search. If not, you should go down the list of sites and ask them to kindly remove your email address because they are just feeding it to spam harvesters!
I usually Google my personal email address a few times a year just as a safety check. Just last year as I was doing my check, I noticed there was one site listing it! I was so mad and immediately contacted the site owner to take it down. It was an article submission site and they were carelessly publicly listing all their users email addresses. That’s just bad business. Eventually they took it down and I told them they should do the same for everyone else in their system.

Conclusion

If there’s one thing to take away from this article it’s to remember to never ever ever list your raw email address on your blog. It’s a guaranteed way to get spam faster than you can say “spam me please”. If you don’t believe me try setting up a new temporary email address and don’t use it for anything except this test. Now paste it on your blog and see how long it takes before you start getting junk email.
